Description:

Obesity is associated with increased risk for a variety of medical problems including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, sleep apnea, and dyslipidemia. Internists are uniquely positioned to diagnose and evaluate obesity, as well as offer interventions. These interventions may include medically supervised weight loss, with or without referral for bariatric surgery and or referral to a specialist. Developing skills in interviewing, counselling and coaching patients to achieve and maintain weight loss can make a profound and significant impact on the physical and psychological health of the adult patient. The student will attend weekly Grand Rounds and Internal Medicine block conference, after speaking with the preceptor.
